“Ordered shut” almost never means what you think

An emergency closure sounds like the end of a restaurant. It reads like a death notice, and it gets shared like one.

It is almost never that.

What the record shows

Since July 2023 the state has recorded 4,363 emergency closures. Of those:

• 4,105 (94%) have a return visit clearing them to reopen
• 3,364 — more than three quarters of all closures — were cleared within a single day
• 3,592 within three days
• 3,707 within a week

The remaining 258 have no clearing visit on record. Some of those places closed for good. Some were sold. Some are simply waiting on a return visit that has not been filed yet.

Why it works like that

An emergency order is not a verdict on a business. It is an inspector saying stop, right now, until this specific thing is fixed. Very often the specific thing is a cooler that has failed, a water heater that has died, or a pest problem that needs a treatment and a clean.

Those are fixable in an afternoon, and the numbers say that is exactly what usually happens. The system is designed to stop service and restart it quickly, not to put people out of business.

So when you see a closure on this site, the useful question is not were they shut — it is what happened next. Our closures page puts the answer directly under each one, with the duration in days, because the closure on its own is half a sentence.

When it is worth worrying

Two things on a record genuinely deserve your attention:

• A closure with no return visit, especially a recent one. That kitchen has not been cleared.
• Repeat closures. Once is a broken cooler. Three times in two years is how a place is run.

Everything else is a system doing its job, which is the least dramatic and most reassuring reading of it.
